Steinkogler Aigner Architects opted for an unconventional solution. Without resorting to the use of a classic kitchen island, they built a monolithic kitchen block as a room-within-a-roomn installation. All the appliances, including the wine refridgerator, are integrated into the black facade, which also conceals a generous walk-in storage space. Opposite this, in the alcove, there is a kind of “workbench“ – creating a long working and storage surface for a holistic cooking experience.

Kitchens are often the central fixed star in every home. Nevertheless, they also remain a working area where things can be lively and chaotic. A lot of technical equipment, shelving and storage space is also required for a holistic cooking experience. The trend: Being at the centre of the action yet still able to make everything disappear from the scene again quickly.

Black Limestone in Space and Surface: The kitchen in penthouse H. is a master at this coquettish game of hide and seek. Steinkogler Aigner Architects opted for an unconventional solution. The black block and the kitchen worktop are finished in black limestone with a rough surface. The large stone slabs show only a light, flaky pattern of the hand-sanded stone. It is cut in such a way that even the most delicate structuring continues from panel to panel and no “breaks“ are visible. The rough feel of the surface conveys a working atmosphere and sets a force field in the living space. At the same time, the furniture-like character of the wooden underframe blends into the warm atmosphere of the living area. Stone is one of the materials for kitchens in 2021: The material conveys exactly what a kitchen should be: Energy, attraction and a strong accentuation in the living “A kitchen is never just a kitchen. In almost all of our projects, we plan a kitchen that is cuustomised for the apartment or house. If there is a trend at the moment, it is that kitchens are becoming more and more individual and multi-layered in design, and are increasingly being understood as living spaces. This is what makes the detailed work and tinkering around woth the professionals and craftsmen, whether carpenters or stonemasons, so exciting for us.“
